Developing qualifications and skills

Campus Veolia provides a number of training systems aimed at developing employee qualifications in order to meet every new environmental challenge

National Vocational Qualifications

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-related, competence based qualifications which reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job. They have a clear focus on providing both knowledge and skills your staff need to apply to their job role in your business sector.

NVQ's 5 Levels

  • Level 1 - Foundation skills in occupations.
  • Level 2 - Operative or semi-skilled occupations.
  • Level 3 - Technician, craft, skilled and supervisory occupations.
  • Level 4 - Technical and junior management occupations.
  • Level 5 - Chartered, professional and senior management occupations.

These are available to anyone at any age or stage of their career, have no entry qualifications and are very flexible.

NVQs are assessed in the workplace through observation of job performance, evaluation of evidence and questioning by the NVQ assessor. Our qualified NVQ assessors work flexible hours in order to provide training at times to suit your working patterns or shifts. They are based on national occupational standards that cover all the main aspects of a job. These include the best way to do things, how to adapt to future changes and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance. There are NVQs available for almost all occupations. NVQs are broken down into units which are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning. You will also have to collect evidence to prove you have the skills and knowledge to achieve each unit and meet the NVQ standards you are studying for.

Apprenticeships

In the LSC's National Employer Statistical Survey (NESS) of January 2004 almost half of the employers reporting "skills shortage vacancies" said they are losing business to competitors as a result of a lack of skilled workers.

Campus Veolia support and champion the apprentice training scheme for all business sectors. With recruiting apprentices in the workplace, it is considered to be a key part of succession planning strategy to ensure the organisations have the skills its needs to be competitive now and in the future. From the beginning, apprentices are given the right tools to do the job and are monitored by the programme's assessors and mentors through the company's own quality control systems. The apprentices are trained at different levels, both in the workplace and college in a variety of skills that meet the identified needs in the business sectors. Businesses need new people to ensure they are able to deliver their strategic business objectives. By offering the apprenticeships, it is easier to recruit able young people, e.g. such as engineers, where the UK are currently facing chronic skills shortages. In addition, the individual gets transferable skill that will satisfy their initial employment goal.
